What are the advantages of a self drive holiday?
Self drive holidays give you the flexibility of changing your plans at a moment’s notice. You can visit places that are not included in many guided tours, and spend as long or as little time as you wish at a destination or attraction, depending on your own interests. Don’t go during the peak times of the year if at all possible – that’s when traffic is at its highest, even off the highways. Spring and autumn (fall) are the best times for most routes. If you travel in the summer, add a little extra to the driving time between destinations.

How are Best Self Drive Routes chosen?
Best Self Drive Routes are based on the experiences of people who have travelled these roads, drivers who enjoy discovering the scenery and attractions beyond the highways. We try to highlight the unique or special. Best Self Drive Routes are not for drivers who want to get from A to D without stopping off in B and C.

Some routes will appeal to nature lovers and those who enjoy good food and wine, others are for those whose interests are in history or outstanding architecture. Some Best Self Drive routes are for those travelling with children, others for keen golfers, surfers, divers.

Best Self Drive Routes is not intended to be a conventional travel planner, it’s more of a source of inspiration and new ideas for getting off the highways when on a self-drive holiday.

The route descriptions in Best Self Drive Routes itineraries are  indicative and given day by day. This means an itinerary for a day’s driving. Of course, you may well want to extend your trip by staying an extra day or two at any of the locations.
